John expressed doubt in Hayti, or the Black Republic that a book on Haitian history would “prove interesting for the general reader” because hitherto it had been nothing “but a series of plots and revolutions, followed by barbarous military executions.” Haiti: The Aftershocks of History, which is Dubois’ narrative of the last 200 years of Haitian history, is an apology written for a general audience in the same advocate style as Avengers of the New World and A Colony of Citizens. Dubois has another book about the French Revolution in Guadeloupe in the eastern Caribbean, A Colony of Citizens: Revolution & Slave Emancipation in the French Caribbean, 1787-1804. This book is a sequel to his magnum opus, Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution, which is his own account of the Haitian Revolution in French Saint-Domingue. Laurent Dubois, a historian at Duke University who specializes in the French Caribbean, wrote Haiti: The Aftershocks of History in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake.
